A Crayon Lathe

When I first stumbled on this, I thought it was a joke.  But no its a real build and it can be used to help teach kids not only about building tools.  But how to use a lathe (safely). http://www.instructables.com/id/Crayon-Lathe-LittleBits/ … Continue reading

Opensource RC car

Stumbled on this project, called Truggy, its an opensource design for a high end RC car.  So if you are into the high end stuff, this might be another way to customize your car.  Of course it doesn’t include motors, … Continue reading

New (well to me) Nylon Filament for 3D printers

This sounds pretty cool, and nylon is really strong. But…I know there are fume issues with nylon, so this would be a wait a see thing for me. http://www.3ders.org/articles/20130613-new-nylon-filament-for-3d-printers-made-in-italy.html

Neat little ornithopter with 3D printed

Cute little thing.  Nice write-up to build it too. http://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Printed-Ornithopter-Micro-UAV-Drone/

3D print your Paintball Pistol to be a Sniper Rifle

This is cool.  The author took a standard $100 paintball pistol and designed, and printed adapters to convert it to a rifle. http://hackaday.com/2014/01/07/paintball-pistol-turned-sniper-rifle/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+hackaday%2FLgoM+%28Hack+a+Day%29

A $500 3D printer that looks pretty good, and assembled

This will be one to keep an eye on, its a 3D printer by XYZprinting and it sounds pretty promising for a under $500 dollar cost.  Currently the next best thing is a PrintrBot at $400 (you assemble it). http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/07/499-3d-printer/?ncid=rss_truncated

Opensource Knitting Machine

In other words, a loom of sorts.  This looks interesting, any could be a good way to quickly make custom hats/clothing and not have to depend on things like cafepress (and the cost).  Downside, the hardware is real knitting machine … Continue reading

3D printed, electrostatic motor

Interesting design (note the metal used was not 3D printed).  it seems to have plenty of power behind it while running on very little electricity.  But…its a bit bulky. http://www.3ders.org/articles/20131226-free-energy-an-3d-printed-electrostatic-motor-with-high-torque.html

3D printer for Jello Shots

I saw this about a month ago, Its basically a take on the CD ROM to CNC conversion.  As I have found out, most CD-ROM drives use DC motors now so finding ones with steppers is hard. http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/26/3d-jello-shot-printer/   http://spritesmods.com/?art=jello3dprinter&f=yt … Continue reading

Simple Spherebot with Arduino

Nice write-up by the author on building a simple spherebot to “paint eggs” with an arduino controller. You still need a 3D printer, but the parts are much smaller (and could be outsourced easier). http://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Printed-Arduino-Controlled-EggbotSpherepot/
