Husband 3D prints wifes brains for easier surgery

Gotta love this article, the husband 3D printed the MRI scans of his wife’s brain to show where cancer was and to find a simpler surgery for her.  What was interesting was the software, invesalius, which is a free download, to convert … Continue reading

Facebook takes after Netflix and Google, Opensources a bunch of tools

Looks like Facebook opensourced a bunch of its AI work.  Netflix and Google have done similar things with mixed results.  I’ll have to take a look at it in more detail in the future. http://www.wired.com/2015/01/facebook-open-sources-trove-ai-tools/

5 Interesting scanners (Some Opensource)

So, you want to duplicate an object with your 3D printer, but don’t have a scanner, here is a good article that lists 5 opensource or relatively cheap scanners you can build. http://makezine.com/2015/01/15/5-diy-3d-scanners-to-watch/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=%24%7Bfeed%7D&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+%24%7Bmakezineonline%7D+%28%24%7BMAKE%7D%29&utm_content=%24%7BGoogleReader%7D

3D print your spare keys

Nice write-up on how to measure and build a copy of some odd car keys.  Considering dealers now charge 80 and up for some of these keys, this is worth keeping in mind.  Note, if you have an old or … Continue reading

Moving stuff with strings

I like this idea.  Actually I remember it from college but haven’t thought about it in a long time.  This would be a good way to make “arms” for robots with a low power motor. http://hackaday.com/2015/01/17/twisted-string-actuators/

Instructions on err…building an adult toy

I knew it would happen sooner or later.  Someone would write up and publish designs for sex toys on instructables.  That aside, its an interesting write up combining 3D printing with internal motors an an arduino controller. http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-Mod-v01-Vibrating-Sensing-Open-Hardware-Per/

Build a pepetual stick calender

Nice build, and would be an easy one to convert from laser engraving to CNC.  🙂 http://www.instructables.com/id/Perpetual-Calendar-1/

Simple write-up on using a cheap stepper with an arduino

Looks like one of those really cheezy ones found inside cheap printers.  Pretty simple write-up for those that are interested. http://www.instructables.com/id/Driving-the-pm55L-048-hp69-with-Arduino/

Nice simple tutorial on how to start using a CNC, from CAD down

Nice write-up, what I also like is the template for the CD case is included, so in theory it could be adapted for other items. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-CNC-In-three-steps/

OK looks like the french are already ahead on the 3D printed Adult toys

The french company, SexShop3D not only makes custom 3D printed…toys…but apparently has released designs you can buy to make your own at home.  Sounds like allot of work to me. http://3dprintingindustry.com/2015/01/14/safely-enjoy-3d-printed-sex-toy/
