Yeggi, Search Engine for 3D Objects

I stumbled across this by accident.  Its a website that seems to combine a bunch of different 3D print design sites (like thingiverse) and is a one stop search for them all.  Worth bookmarking for now. http://www.yeggi.com/

Nice starting point for CNC software

Nice write-up from hack-a-day on a good starting point for software for CNC.  It goes over free, cheap, and not so cheap solutions that a tinker could afford. http://hackaday.com/2013/12/23/software-advice-for-anyone-thinking-about-a-cnc-router/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+hackaday%2FLgoM+%28Hack+a+Day%29

A Needle Printer

This is interesting design, the author for around $200 build a printer that uses a needle to punch holes in paper.  This could have potential to make expand into needlepoint someday. http://hackaday.com/2013/12/19/a-weird-kind-of-printer/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+hackaday%2FLgoM+%28Hack+a+Day%29

$1,500 in parts = Metal 3D printer

For apparently a $1500 in parts, some kids at Un. of Michigan built a 3D metal printer.  Its in the “prototype” stage right now, and I question the $1500 cost (its student money, which translated, could be 2x the cost). … Continue reading

3D-printers + cloud = not secure

Interesting article, just points out that the hobby groups for 3D printing are not thinking about security…at all. http://www.3ders.org/articles/20131130-3d-printers-in-the-cloud-and-network-security-challenge.html

Printing Without a 3D Printer

Good article from Make Mag on how to do a 3D print without a printer.  The one thing the author doesn’t mention is the cost can be a bit high. http://makezine.com/magazine/guide-to-3d-printing-2014/printing-without-a-3d-printer/

Handheld Router Only Cuts Where Needed for 3D models

I seem to be on an MIT kick today.   This time its a router that has a sensor in it to know when to “cut” when a user is holding it to build a 3D object.  This is a … Continue reading

A mini CNC plotter

I have to say I was pretty impressed with this little plotter design.  Simple and easy to make.  Only downside is the servos used are like $12 a whack. http://hackaday.com/2013/11/21/a-six-part-cnc-machine/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+hackaday%2FLgoM+%28Hack+a+Day%29 http://plotterbot.com/2013/11/how-to-build-a-tiny-cnc-drawing-robot/

Nice CNC built by a 16-17 year old

Took the kid over a year to build it, but it looks nicer than some shopbots.  Not sure on the total cost, but I would put it close to 1 G in material. http://www.instructables.com/id/Building-a-CNC-router/

$100 dollar Filament Extruder

This has to be the cheapest one yet.  Guy put it together for $100. http://hackaday.com/2013/11/01/low-cost-filament-extruder/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+hackaday%2FLgoM+%28Hack+a+Day%29
