Cheap laser cutters and upgrades

I was reading the bottom article on DangerousPrototypes today, and it got me thinking about how to upgrade some of the cheap laser cutters you can now get for $400-500 dollars (and cheaper).  And doesn’t hackaday have an article on it.  Personally I will stick with CNC, since I already have the materials and the knowledge.  And I can do 3D vs just 2D or just engraving with a laser.
