$1,500 in parts = Metal 3D printer

For apparently a $1500 in parts, some kids at Un. of Michigan built a 3D metal printer.  Its in the “prototype” stage right now, and I question the $1500 cost (its student money, which translated, could be 2x the cost). … Continue reading

Heat Gun + arduino + 2 motors = Thermal Imaging Camera

Looks like for $100 in parts the author build a thermal imaging camera.  Its slow since it has too scan each x/y area, but it does the job. http://hackaday.com/2013/12/01/diy-thermal-imaging-camera/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+hackaday%2FLgoM+%28Hack+a+Day%29 http://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/diy-scanning-thermal-camera/

Nuts, I sponsored another kickstarter like project

Its a bluetooth arduino for 20-25 dollars with low power consumption.  It sounds promising. and for the cheap price (cheaper than some arduino bluetooth shields) its worth a shot.  Oh its more of an ATiny though. https://launch.punchthrough.com/

How Credit card numbers are made

Interesting article about how they are made (and the tech goes back to the 1970s).  No wonder its so easy to make your own that is valid. http://gizmodo.com/how-credit-card-numbers-are-created-892868494

Nice write-up on hacking TI’s Chronos Watch

Nice write-up on the options and tinkering you can do with TI’s MSP430 Chronos watch.  I got one of these a while back on sale.  I haven’t found a good project for it yet, but this maybe a good time … Continue reading

The Copenhagen Wheel

This bicycle wheel is coming out of MIT, well licensed from MIT (translation, some grad student(s) maybe getting the shaft, either from MIT claiming ownership, or MIT selling them out).  Its a neat idea and sounds much better than existing … Continue reading

Simple But Effective Point-of-Sale Skimmer — Krebs on Security

This is pretty scary, a simple “shield” that fits over a credit card POS system and looks just like the real thing.  Now I am going to start pulling on card machines at stores too… http://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/12/simple-but-effective-point-of-sale-skimmer/

3D-printers + cloud = not secure

Interesting article, just points out that the hobby groups for 3D printing are not thinking about security…at all. http://www.3ders.org/articles/20131130-3d-printers-in-the-cloud-and-network-security-challenge.html
